Understanding shouldn’t be something you rent.

We’re five friends building the foundation that lets a company’s AI understand how it works, and lets the company keep that understanding as its own.

Where it started

Two lines that met.

Niklas and Jan started working on the same problem independently, from two sides: Niklas coming from machine learning, Jan from business. For years, both had been building a “second brain”: notes and tools meant to connect everything they knew. They were good at storing. They never understood. The one link we wanted, this means that, was always missing.

At work they met the same problem again: Niklas building machine-learning pipelines, watching capable AI work on data without ever grasping its meaning; Jan inside the Mittelstand, at a leading asset-finance company, seeing the same blind spot.

The private frustration and the industrial one were the same problem, only at a different scale.

So we did the obvious thing. We solved it on ourselves first.

The team, before it was a team

We trusted each other before we founded anything.

Niklas, Jan and Gabriel met through the Studienstiftung and have been close for years. Ansel and Jonas came through Niklas, both fellow students, one in Stuttgart, one in Tübingen. Folaint isn’t a cap table that happened to assemble. It’s a circle of friends that decided to build.

Two of us grew up on farms, a world where knowledge is handed down, and only counts for anything if it holds for years.

Why now

The right moment, not just the right idea.

The pressure
The German Mittelstand is squeezed: cost pressure from the Far East, a productivity race with the US and Asia. AI is the lever to stay competitive. But only if it understands the business instead of guessing at it.
The moment
Only now are language models good enough to draft the meaning an needs, which is what makes the whole thing buildable, and affordable. What used to be a multi-year consulting project can now be a product the Mittelstand can afford.
The sovereignty
And it runs on the customer’s own infrastructure. The data stays where it is; nothing is routed elsewhere. Competitiveness and data sovereignty, not one at the cost of the other.

For us, the timing is personal too: our studies are wrapping up, the craft is ready. Niklas goes all-in, full-time, from July 2026.

What we believe

We don’t rent you the house. We hand you the tool to build your own.

Most software is a rented house. You move in, you pay every month, and when you leave, nothing stays. Folaint is the hammer: what you build with it is permanent, and it’s yours. Your business meaning, structured on open standards, owned outright. That is the difference from ordinary software.

Intelligence is rentable. Understanding is not.

The five of us

The people behind it.

Engineers, and the commercial minds beside them, who would rather get the meaning right than ship a clever guess.

What we hold to

The principles we build by.

Meaning you own, not rent

It’s built on open standards, so it stays yours even if you leave us one day.

Your experts have the last word

The model drafts an answer; nothing becomes fact until one of your experts signs it off.

Every answer shows its work

Follow any answer back to the exact source it came from, and check for yourself that it holds.

Where we are

Built in Europe, under EU rules.

Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Rooted in Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany, close to the Mittelstand and the regulated industries we serve, and to the standards bodies that define their meaning.

Build the layer AI is missing.

We’re a small team with hard problems and high standards. If that sounds right, write to us.
